The Frans Claas Award

The Frans Claas Award was established by the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) to support early-career professionals in the field of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (H&I) in attending the International Histocompatibility Summer School (IHSS).

The award honors the legacy of Professor Frans Claas, one of the most influential transplant immunologists and H&I experts within EFI. Throughout his career, he actively promoted education, international collaboration, and equal access to scientific development opportunities, particularly for young professionals and colleagues from under-resourced regions.

By removing financial barriers, the Frans Claas Award aims to strengthen expertise, encourage international exchange, and contribute to a diverse and inclusive future for the H&I community.

Each award includes:

  • Full IHSS registration coverage
  • Travel support (economy class)
  • Accommodation support
  • EFI membership for one year

One to two awards will be granted for each IHSS cycle

Who can apply?
Early-career professionals in Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics who:
• Are committed to the H&I field
• Require financial support to attend the IHSS
• Want to contribute to collaboration, education, science and patient care

  • A curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A motivation letter including:
    • Professional background
    • Motivation for attending the IHSS
